THE MODERATOR
Doug Banks is publisher and editor of Mass High Tech, an information services company that includes a daily news web site, a biweekly print publication, e-newletters and events that spotlight technology entrepreneurship, early-stage companies and emerging technologies in New England.Doug joined MHT as editor in 2005, led an editorial redesign of the publication in 2006 and led a second redesign in 2009. He was named publisher in January 2010. In that time, MHT has launched several new programs, a new web site and industry-specific newsletters including daily BioFlash and FinanceFlash as well as a weekly GreenFlash and Startup Report. Mass High Tech has won several journalism awards, including top design awards in 2007, 2008 and 2009 by the New England Press Association (NEPA), awards for infographics and business/economic journalism in 2008 and 2009 by NEPA, and a 2007 certificate of merit for general excellence by the national Society of Business Editors and Writers (SABEW).
From 2001 to 2005, Doug was associate editor of the Boston Business Journal (BBJ). He came to the BBJ from Fast Company magazine, where he had been a staff editor after an earlier stint as a reporter/editor at the BBJ in the late 1990s.
Outside the newsroom, Doug has taught journalism and writing at Emerson College, Boston University, Endicott College and the University of Pittsburgh. He has been a guest lecturer at several other universities, including Tufts University and Boston College. He is a 2010 LeadBoston fellow with the Boston Center for Community and Justice and is a former board member of Housing Families Inc. and Families for Depression Awareness. He is a steering committee member for the MIT Enterprise Forum of Cambridge and works closely with several other regional technology associations, including the New England Clean Energy Council, Mass Technology Leadership Council, MITX and TechAmerica’s American Technology Awards.
A native of Worcester, Banks received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and English literature from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a master’s of fine arts in nonfiction writing from the University of Pittsburgh. He is a volunteer for Junior Achievement, an active member of Calvary Christian Church in Lynnfield and is married with two young children.

DR. JOANNA T. LAU is Founder
and CEO of LAU Technologies, a management consulting and investment entity
located in Concord, Massachusetts.
Formed in 1990, Joanna grew LAU Technologies into three business units
(Lau Defense System, Viisage Technology, and Lau Security System) -- providing
system integration, development and delivery of high-end electronic system for
military applications; secure identification system and surveillance system.
Joanna received her BS of Computer Sciences and Applied Mathematics from SUNY
of Stony Brook, MS of Computer Sciences from Old Dominion University, MBA from
Boston University and Honorary Doctorate Degrees in Commercial Sciences from
Bryant University, Bentley University and Suffolk University. Joanna has received numerous business
and civic awards including the 1995 National Entrepreneur of the Year Award
sponsored by INC and Ernst & Young LLP. Joanna is on the Board of Directors
of DSW Inc. (NYSE:DSW), ITT Education Service Inc (NYSE:ESI), John F. Kennedy
Library Foundation, Nellie Mae Education Foundation, National Association of
Corporate Director (NACD) and the National Defense Industrial Association.
WILLOW SHIRE spent 20 years in the computer industry and was featured on the cover of Fortune for her work in organizational transformation. She served as a vice president and officer at Digital Equipment Corp with responsibility for their $1B Healthcare market. In addition to her healthcare work with Digital, she also initiated and managed Washington’s Computer Systems Public Policy Task Force on Healthcare. In 1994 she founded Orchard Consulting working with executive teams to design and implement their mission, strategy, marketing plans as well as focusing on team and leadership development. She has served on the board of high tech companies and is currently on the board of the TJX Corporation where she chairs Corporate Governance. In addition, she is an active volunteer on the boards of the US Fund for UNICEF and the Cape Cod Art Association. She holds a bachelors degree from Boston University’s School of Education, a Masters from Harvard School of Education, with advanced work at Columbia University and INSEAD in France.

is chairman of W2 Group, a global
marketing services ecosystem that helps CMOs in their new role as builders of
communities and content aggregators.
W2 Group companies, including Digital Influence Group and Racepoint Group, are leaders in social
media marketing in both paid and unpaid media.
Larry is the co-founder and chairman
of the Massachusetts Innovation and Technology Exchange (MITX), the world’s
largest interactive advocacy organization, and a member of the Executive
Committee of the U.S. Council of Competitiveness.
